Bad travel stories can teach us a lot about what to do – and what not to do – when we travel. By learning from the mistakes of others, we can avoid making the same mistakes ourselves.

Bad travel stories can also be a source of entertainment, providing a good laugh at the expense of those who have had less-than-perfect travel experiences. And who doesn’t love a good story, anyway?

So if you’re looking for some learnings or just a good laugh, here are some Bad Travelling Short Story / Stories to get you started.

#1 Story – The Thief

The Thief - Bad Travelling Short Story
The Thief

I was recently on a trip to Europe with my family and we had the most horrible experience. We were staying in a nice hotel in Spain and everything was going great until one night. We were all in our room when we heard a knock on the door. My dad answered it and there was a man there who said he was the police. He asked to come in and my dad let him. The man then asked if we had anything valuable in the room.

We told him no and he started to search the place. He found our passports and started to go through them. He then took my dad’s wallet and all the money out. He also took my mom’s jewelry and my sister’s iPad. We were all so scared and didn’t know what to do. The man then left and we called the police. They came and took a report but we never got our stuff back. It was a really scary experience and we will never forget it.

#2 Story – Getting Lost

Getting Lost

We were on vacation in Mexico and we decided to go on a day trip to a nearby town. We took a bus there and it was a lot of fun. We were walking around and exploring when we suddenly realized that we were lost. We had no idea where we were and didn’t speak Spanish. We didn’t know what to do and we were getting really scared.

We saw a police officer and we tried to ask him for help, but he didn’t understand us. We were trying to gesture to him and finally he understood. He called someone who could speak English and they helped us find our way back to our hotel. It was a scary experience, but we’re so glad we made it back safely.

#3 Story – Hitchhiking

Hitchhiking
Hitchhiking

I was trying to save money by hitchhiking across Europe. A big mistake. I ended up getting a ride from a creep who tried to rob me. I was able to fight him off and ran for my life.

I hitchhiked again; this time, the driver was a psychopath who tried to grab me. I could only escape by jumping out of the moving car. Finally, I gave up hitchhiking and took the bus.

#4 Story – Budget

Budget

I was on a budget vacation with my family. We were constantly arguing because we were all cramped up in a tiny hotel room.

My parents were fighting, my siblings were fighting, and I was just trying to keep everyone from killing each other. We ended up cutting the vacation short and going home early.

#5 Story – Ill, Passport, Robbed

Passport Airport - Bad Travelling Short Story
Passport Airport

I was on my way to Europe when I realized I had left my passport at home. I had to turn back around and fly all the way home, missing my flight and wasting a ton of money.

I was in the middle of a backpacking trip through Asia when I got robbed. All my money and credit cards were gone, and I had to find a way to get home.

I was traveling solo in South America when I got seriously ill. I had to be hospitalized and it was a very scary experience.

#6 Story – Drunk / Drugs

Drunk

I was in Thailand and I decided to go to this place called the Full Moon Party. It was a really bad idea. I drank too much and ended up getting really sick.

I ended up puking my guts out and had to be carried back to my hostel. It was a really embarrassing and gross experience.

#7 Story – Pickpocketed …

Pickpocketed
Pickpocketed

It was the middle of summer and the heat was unbearable. The sun was beating down mercilessly on the pavement, making the air feel thick and suffocating. The only sound was the occasional car passing by, their tires kicking up little puffs of dust.

I was on my way to meet my friend for lunch, but I was already feeling irritable and sweaty. The last thing I wanted was to be stuck in a stuffy restaurant, but my friend had insisted.

As I neared the restaurant, I saw her sitting outside, immersed in a book. She looked up as I approached and smiled.

“Hey, I ordered you a drink. I hope you don’t mind.”

I gratefully took the glass of iced tea from her and took a long sip.

“So, how was your week?” she asked.

I groaned. “Don’t even get me started. I had to deal with a screaming baby on the plane, a lost luggage, and a canceled connecting flight. I’m telling you, I’m never traveling again.”

My friend laughed. “I know how you feel. I had a bad experience too. I was pickpocketed in Rome.”

I shook my head. “That’s nothing. Just wait until you hear about my week.”

And so, we spent the next hour trading travel horror stories. We had plenty of material from being stranded in airports to getting sick in exotic places.

By the time we finished our drinks, we were both laughing.

“You know,” my friend said, “despite all the bad experiences, I still love traveling. I can’t imagine not going on new adventures.”

I nodded. “I know what you mean. I guess we just have to take the good with the bad.”
